Park Manager

Bruce Chavis

Park Manager

Welcome to H. Cooper Black Jr. Memorial Field Trial and Recreation Area.  I am Bruce Chavis, the park manager.  I have worked at H. Cooper Black since 2010.  I was named the park manager in 2023.  Before becoming a park ranger, I worked at PEPSICO for 27 years, but I immediately fell in love with the job and being a park ranger.  I’m an outdoorsman who loves camping.  I was raised in the area and own a farm nearby.  My wife and I are blessed to call H. Cooper Black, home.

One of my favorite things about this park is meeting and assisting our guests.  I love to see them enjoying the facilities and grounds at the park.

If you’re a first-time visitor, make sure to take a moment and watch the sunrise over Goose Pond or the sunset at Wood Duck Pond.  Both are beautiful.  The open area at Palmetto Field is great for stargazers to see the universe, without light interference.

**Our Ultimate Outsider stamp is located just outside the entrance to the park office.
