The first Campground Cookoff in South Carolina will be held September 19-21, 2008 at the Calhoun Falls State Recreation Area on Lake Russell.
Three nationally known celebrity judges -- Rick Browne from PBS Barbecue America; Dotty Griffith, the former dining and food editor for 30 years at the Dallas Morning News and Charles Mattocks aka "The Poor Chef" seen on NBC affiliates -- will choose the winners of the South Carolina Old 96 District Campground Cookoff. The categories will include: the best appetizer, entree or dessert prepared over a campfire of charcoal or wood. The food must be prepared from scratch.
Cash prizes of $500, $300 and $200 and other in-kind donations will be awarded for first, second and third place winners. Applications must be received by August 15, 2008.
The award-winning recipes will be compiled into a cookbook available online after the Campground Cookoff.

Join a park ranger on a guided walk of the Cedar Bluff Nature Trail. See some of our favorite spots, plants and animals. The trail is a moderate 1.75 mile hike, but we'll be taking our time, so Come Out and Play! Calhoun Falls State Recreation Area

This event is an opportunity to learn about the archaeological research conducted at Redcliffe and the surrounding area. An archaeologist with the Savannah River Archaeological Research Program will be on hand to discuss both prehistoric and historic archaeology in the Savannah River area. Redcliffe’s Interpreter will hold discussions on archaeological research at Redcliffe Plantation. Artifacts from the Redcliffe excavations will also be on display. Have you ever strolled through a cemetery and looked at old gravestones? Many are decorated with designs, quotes, or engravings that had special meaning for the deceased or their loved ones. Take a walk with us through the Beech Island Cemetery where Governor Hammond and many of his descendants are buried. Learn about gravestone motifs and the movement to protect, preserve, and document cemetery history. Special instructions and alternatives to the traditional gravestone rubbings will be discussed so that you may capture interesting designs without damaging these fragile markers. Explore the holidays at Redcliffe Plantation from the perspective of the enslaved women, men, and children that were owned by the Hammond family. Participants will be guided through the slave quarters and hear stories about 19th century Christmas rituals. Five categories are presented that highlight important aspects of the holiday season for Hammond's slaves: food, Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site

African Americans worked for four generations of the Hammond family, first as slaves, later as sharecroppers and tenant farmers, and finally as paid employees. Come learn about the lives of African Americans at Silver Bluff, Cowden, Cathwood and Redcliffe plantations from 1831 to 1975. Visitors will participate in hands-on activities, such as artifact identification, learning how historians investigate the social and cultural aspects of those who worked for the Hammond/Billings families. Participants will also receive a booklet with primary and secondary documentation, illustrations and photographs of African-American history from the files of Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site. Do you enjoy camping, but want to enjoy it a little more? Well, your dream RV awaits you at the Spring RV Show at Calhoun Falls State Recreation Site. The latest RV’s and accessories will be on display, so join the park staff and Jody’s of Greenwood for a weekend of food, fun, and prizes.
There's fun for the younger campers as well, as children can write an essay on their favorite place to camp or their favorite camping activity and submit it in our Camping Kids Essay Contest. It's the last month of our 75th anniversary celebration for the South Carolina State Park Service, and Hamilton Branch SP would like to invite you to a party. Food, stories, and a beautiful setting on the shore of Lake Strom Thurmond - what better way to celebrate. Join us for a traditional campsite meal experience! We'll roast hot dogs and make s’mores on an open campfire.
