Come to Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site for an inside look at Heirloom gardening. We’ll examine the history, seeds, and planting methods of antebellum kitchen gardens as well as ornamental and formal gardens, and take a look at the heirloom roses for which this site is well known.
The focus of this program is the selection and planting of heirloom vegetables. Come and meet our Master Gardener, Heirloom Specialist and Certified Organic Gardener Rodger Winn, who will be here to discuss site selection, plot preparation, planting techniques, plant selection, and growing techniques. Explore the past from a perspective we all can understand: the growing of the foodstuffs our ancestors ate, the diet of the past, and the varieties of vegetables that have stood the test of time.
Ornamental gardens were also a part of the historic landscape at Rose Hill Plantation. The Gist family were gardeners, and the very name of the plantation came from the ornamental rose gardens that were planted and tended here. Our Master Gardeners, Jim & Diana Glaser will be here to discuss the care, selection, and planting of heirloom roses and other flowers. Pruning, fertilizing, and the specifics of planting and caring for heirloom roses will be topics of discussion, in an interactive program for persons of all ages and all skill levels who are interested in heirloom gardening.

Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site

Commemorate the Anniversary of Buford's Defeat in the Waxhaws. Event has included speakers, living history demonstrations, colonial church service, and memorials services. Living historians include Continental Line, British Legion, and Militia Units.
