PARK PROGRAMS

  • Finding fun with GPS

It's kind of like hide and seek, but different. After some basic instructions, kids will be given the chance to use their new skills by finding waypoints set by park Rangers. Once you master the GPS, you will be able to set waypoints for your own favorite fishing spots, hiking trails, or geocache. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

  • Campground Cookoff

The first Campground Cookoff in South Carolina will be held September 19-21, 2008 at the Calhoun Falls State Recreation Area on Lake Russell. Three nationally known celebrity judges -- Rick Browne from PBS Barbecue America; Dotty Griffith, the former dining and food editor for 30 years at the Dallas Morning News and Charles Mattocks aka "The Poor Chef" seen on NBC affiliates -- will choose the winners of the South Carolina Old 96 District Campground Cookoff. The categories will include: the best appetizer, entree or dessert prepared over a campfire of charcoal or wood. The food must be prepared from scratch. Cash prizes of $500, $300 and $200 and other in-kind donations will be awarded for first, second and third place winners. Applications must be received by August 15, 2008. The award-winning recipes will be compiled into a cookbook available online after the Campground Cookoff.
