  • Children's Day at Redcliffe Plantation

The day will be filled with fun from the latter half of the nineteenth century. Families will enjoy games from the late 1800’s like Graces, Croquet and the Elements, as well as toys from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Children will enjoy discovering art, architecture, and “tails” of the plantation – the pets of Redcliffe, during house tours designed to appeal to younger children. Every year Redcliffe partners with a special guest for a fun program like a tea party, story time or nature walk. Contact the park for details about this year’s special program. As an end to the day families are encouraged to bring a blanket and enjoy a favorite pastime of the Victorian period – picnicking.

The program includes tours of the historic slave quarters and mansion. Topics will vary but could include discussions of slave resistance, diet and nutrition, family life, work, genealogy and more. • Growing History

What makes a garden an “heirloom” garden? What can gardens tell you about the work, diet, and lifestyles of individuals, families, and communities of 19th century South Carolina? Redcliffe’s heirloom and herb gardens offer visitors a chance to explore these questions and much more. Participants will learn about the varieties of vegetables and herbs used by the Hammond family and persons enslaved on their plantations and receive tips on how to plant their own heirloom garden from a volunteer Master Gardener.

  • Beyond the Gravestone

Have you ever strolled through a cemetery and looked at old gravestones? Many are decorated with designs, quotes, or engravings that had special meaning for the deceased or their loved ones. Take a walk with us through the Beech Island Cemetery where Governor Hammond and many of his descendants are buried. Learn about gravestone motifs and the movement to protect, preserve, and document cemetery history. Special instructions and alternatives to the traditional gravestone rubbings will be discussed so that you may capture interesting designs without damaging these fragile markers.
