Colleton State Park Gets New Paddling, Park Center
A new center for campers and paddlers on the Edisto River has been built at Colleton State Park.
The Edisto River Resource Center & Ranger Station was a joint effort of the S.C. State Park Service, the S.C. National Heritage Corridor, Walterboro Mayor Charlie Sweat and the Edisto River Canoe and Kayak Trail (ERCK).
The 35-acre park has been providing campgrounds, picnicking and a launch site into the blackwater Edisto River for more than 60 years. The new, 720-square-foot center will serve as the park office and as an information center for activities on the river, including the Edisto RiverFest held each June.
The center cost $79,470 to build. Funding included $20,000 from the S.C. National Heritage Corridor, with the rest from the State Park Service, part of the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism.
Mayor Sweat led the effort by the members of ERCK to raise $5,000 to provide the building with a desk, chairs and photographs. The Edisto River is one of the longest blackwater rivers in the country and Colleton State Park, located at the top of a 21-mile trip downriver to Givhans Ferry State Park, has long been a popular put-in spot.
Colleton State Park is located on U.S. 15 near Canadys, just off Interstate 95.
