  • Fireside Chat

    Gather around the fire and listen to stories, songs, legends and lore. If you feel like it, join in singing a campfire song or two, and maybe share a favorite campfire story of your own. This program will be a very casual, light-hearted and relaxing evening designed to get to know your camping neighbors and park ranger. There will be time for questions and answers about the park, park history and wildlife of the area as well. This program is available to registered campers only due to the park closing time. The location will be posted at the visitors' center and given at check-in. Don't forget your marshmallows!

  • Family Fun Day

    Come Out and Play! for Family Fun Day at Calhoun Falls. Bring the whole family to the swimming beach where you can participate in activities including Frisbee Toss, Three-legged Run, Sand Castle Building Contest, Musical Water Buckets, Tug-of-War and more! Be prepared to get wet - but that's half the fun!

  • Morning Float

    Take a leisurely morning paddle to explore the shoreline and quiet coves of Pinnacle Lake to discover what lives in this aquatic habitat.

  • Music in the Woods

    Every Saturday night from May through August, come listen to local bands play folk or acoustic music at Paris Mountain State Park. In the shelter of the trees, the park's stone amphitheatre is the setting for this enjoyable evening of music, courtesy of Paris Mountain State Park Friends, and South Carolina State Park Service.

  • Creek Ranger Hike for Groups

    .June through August weekdays, scheduled groups will be led on a nature hike, looking for animals and their habitats in or near water. Part of the program will be spent in the creek, so bring water shoes! Some finds will be brought back to the lab for an up-close look through the park microscope. Call park office (864-244-5565), or email ctaylor@scprt.com to register for program date and time. Fee: $20. for up to 10 people, $30. for up to 20 people etc., plus admission. All participants will receive a Stewardship Ranger card. Meet at picnic flats parking lot.

  • Creek Ranger Hike for Families

    June through August on Friday mornings at 10 a.m., families will be led on a nature hike, looking for animals and their habitats in or near water. Part of the program will be spent in the creek using nets, so bring or wear water shoes! Some finds will be brought back to the lab for an up-close look under the park microscope, before being returned to their home. The program fee is $5.00 per person. Admission fee is waived.   • Nature Detective in the Forest

    In this one-day camp, spend the day with a ranger, using detective skills to get to know forest creatures and their habitats. Participants will go on a forest scavenger hunt, do a one-square-meter investigation of the forest, use clues to identify trees, birds and reptiles, play games, and use the park lab's Enviroscape. Everyone takes home a pine cone birdfeeder, forest ID booklet, bandana, and their own bug jar/magnifier (without the bug). Bring lunch and a drink. Completed registration form and pre-payment required. Fee. $25. Limit 16 participants.

  • Sunrise Hike

    Be an extra early riser and take a unique moonlit hike to the top of Table Rock. After experiencing the nocturnal aspects of the forest we will enjoy the pre-dawn sky from the outcrop as we anticipate the sunrise.

  • Nature Detective in the Creek

    In this one-day camp, spend the day with a ranger, using detective skills to get to know creek creatures and their habitats. Participants will get in the creek to do a stream water quality investigation, look for clues left by the park's beavers (more than just chewed trees), play games, and take home a craft, a bandana, and their own net with collecting container. Bring: lunch and a drink. Completed registration form and pre-payment required. Fee: $25. Limit 16 participants.

  • Animal Signs Scavenger Hunt

    Participants join the park's Interpretive Ranger on a leisurely one-mile walk around Lake Placid, looking for animals and their homes. We will look under logs, inspect beaver tooth marks, and search for footprints around the lake, seeing how many signs of animals on our scavenger hunt sheet we can find. The program fee is $5.00.   • Scavenger Hunt

    Let's go on a scavenger hunt! Kids, bring an adult and join a Calhoun Falls ranger as we explore the 1 3/4 mile nature trail. As we walk, we will be on the lookout for different plants, animals and other interesting things. Check off objects from your list as you find them. At the end of the trail, compare your list to the other participants.

  • Lake Hartwell Hike

    Join a park ranger for a guided hike along the 1-mile nature trail at Lake Hartwell State Recreation Area. The trail has easy-moderate terrain, so bring good walking shoes or hiking boots. Along the way, we'll see and discuss the effects of Southern Pine Beetles. We'll see Lake Hartwell from a different view than most visitors, and maybe see some wildlife along the way. Be ready for some surprises, too! If you want, there is a great sandy beach suitable for swimming off the trail, so dress accordingly if you want to get in the water.

  • Friends Fourth Saturday Program: Butterflies

    Butterfly specialist and Master Gardene, Ginger Kopka, will discuss the stages of growth of butterflies, and how to plant a butterfly garden to attract butterflies to your own yard. Species of the upstate will be featured. Meet at Park Center.

  • How Paris Mountain's Water Helped Greenville Grow

    It's the 1880s and a growing Greenville needs a water supply. Fortunately, Greenville has the water coming down through the forests of Paris Mountain. Join Interpretive Ranger Cathy Taylor in this interactive walk around Lake Placid, using maps, timelines, and a population game involving sponges and water, to figure out how Paris Mountain's water helped Greenville grow. This is a program created for 8th grade classes, but all history seekers are invited to this 4th Saturday program. The program fee is $5.00 per person. Admission fee is waived. Registration required.   • Campground Cookoff

    The first Campground Cookoff in South Carolina will be held September 19-21, 2008 at the Calhoun Falls State Recreation Area on Lake Russell. Three nationally known celebrity judges -- Rick Browne from PBS Barbecue America; Dotty Griffith, the former dining and food editor for 30 years at the Dallas Morning News and Charles Mattocks aka "The Poor Chef" seen on NBC affiliates -- will choose the winners of the South Carolina Old 96 District Campground Cookoff. The categories will include: the best appetizer, entree or dessert prepared over a campfire of charcoal or wood. The food must be prepared from scratch. Cash prizes of $500, $300 and $200 and other in-kind donations will be awarded for first, second and third place winners. Applications must be received by August 15, 2008. The award-winning recipes will be compiled into a cookbook available online after the Campground Cookoff.

  • Lakeshore Sweep

    In cooperation with Beach Sweep/River Sweep of South Carolina, take part in this effort to keep our wetlands beautiful and safe for people and wildlife. At Table Rock, we will spend the morning removing litter from the shores of Lake Pinnacle and Lake Oolenoy. Let's do our part in helping our resources become cleaner and more attractive. Bring gloves and footwear that can get wet and muddy. This program is designed for ages 10 and above. An adult must accompany ages 17 and under.

  • Nature Walk

    Join a park ranger on a guided walk of the Cedar Bluff Nature Trail. See some of our favorite spots, plants and animals. The trail is a moderate 1.75 mile hike, but we'll be taking our time, so Come Out and Play!

  • For the Birds

    Celebrate the first day of Autumn by making crafts that are just "for the birds." You can construct your own bird feeder or bird house while the Park Ranger tells you about local birds and how they live around Lake Hartwell. Basic materials will be provided.

    After a hot summer, and the first week of autumn is a great time to get out to see what the fall migration is sending our way. We will look for various warblers and other songbirds that we have not seen since last spring . The outing will be led by the Park Naturalist and members of the Greenville County Bird Club will be on hand to enjoy a morning of fall birding as we observe a variety of habitats.

  • Pinnacle Mountain Day Hike

    Every season offers its own unique experience on the trails. Pinnacle Mountain is a strenuous hike with plenty of beauty to behold. This round trip hike of over 8 miles will lead us through the hardwood forest past several streams to a scenic lunch stop on an outcrop overlook. Fall will be nearing its peak and we'll take it all in along the way.

  • Frontier Encampment

    Travel back in time to the years immediately following the American Revolution when Oconee Station was a frontier outpost. Learn what life was like for the frontiersmen of this bygone era. This program will include a variety of period-related activities such as rope making, cooking and black powder demonstrations.

  • Friends Fourth Saturday Program: The Cherokees

    Who were the first people in our area? Marie Burgess, naturalist and environmental historian from Furman Univerisity, will give an overview of the social and environmental history of the Cherokee people.

    Take a leisurely walk to Mountain Lake and feast your eyes on the colors of fall refected in calm water. The water music of Mountain Creek will accompany us along the way as we identify leaves and investigate the reasons for their colors. The program fee is $5. per person. Admission fee is waived.   • Fall Foliage Walk

    Forest colors should be at their peak and there is no better time to enjoy autumn's beauty. This guided walk follows a section of an old CCC trail along Pinnacle Lake. Insights about seasonal changes within the forest ecosystem will be shared along the trail.

  • Stool Mountain Day Hike

    As the peak of fall nears, hike to the top of Stool Mountain to enjoy the richness of the season. Great views and fascinating geology are included in this unique trip which is approximately 4 miles round trip with some off-trail hiking.

    In support of the nation-wide Great Backyard Bird Count, observations will be made at Table Rock. The information we gather will contribute to a broad study by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology of winter bird populations in North America. Participants can enjoy a morning of birdwatching as we seek out a variety of species in wooded, weedy, and wetland habitats.

  • Clues to the Past Hike

    A walk around Lake Placid reveals many clues to the past, from geological history to the story behind the dam built in 1898 to the structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Even fallen trees have a story to tell of past times at Paris Mountain State Park, revealed in their rings.     The cool days of late fall are perfect for this strenuous 2.3-mile hike. We'll take Brissy Ridge Trail and hike to lofty views of the forest watershed slowly filtering down, down into streams of life and to Buckhorn Lake in the distance. Fee is $8. per person.   • Boating Safety Tips and Fishing Regulations of Lake Hartwell

    It's time to check your boat and test your knowledge of fishing on Lake Hartwell. Staff at Lake Hartwell State Recreation Area and Department of Natural Resources enforcement officers will discuss boating safety and etiquette as well as fishing regulations on Lake Hartwell, then check your boat to make sure your next outing is safe and enjoyable.

    April is the peak for woodland floral attractions. This trail walk will display a variety of wildflowers and other plants that can be found in the mountains. Discover what blooms in our forested habitats during the spring season.

    Admission to the park is free on this day of celebration, hosted by Paris Mountain State Park friends and the state park staff. Enjoy children's activities, educational programs, free boat rides, music, food, and fun as a thank you to the community. Event lasts from 11 am till 4 pm.

    Table Rock is a designated Important Bird Area in South Carolina and a variety of birds can be seen and heard among wooded, weedy, and wetland habitats. During this morning walk common and uncommon species will be identified by means of prominent field marks, vocalizations, and other behaviors.
