  • Canoe With a Ranger

    Fall is a wonderful time to get out and see the seasons begin to change. Join us as we paddle on the beautiful South Fork of the Edisto River, quietly enjoying the morning scenery along the banks. We'll meet at the canoe launch dock at 9:00 a.m., then take a quick shuttle to our put-in location. The two-mile trip will take approximately two hours to complete.

  • Beyond the Gravestone

    Have you ever strolled through a cemetery and looked at old gravestones? Many are decorated with designs, quotes, or engravings that had special meaning for the deceased or their loved ones. Take a walk with us through the Beech Island Cemetery where Governor Hammond and many of his descendants are buried. Learn about gravestone motifs and the movement to protect, preserve, and document cemetery history. Special instructions and alternatives to the traditional gravestone rubbings will be discussed so that you may capture interesting designs without damaging these fragile markers.

  • Christmas in the Quarters

    Explore the holidays at Redcliffe Plantation from the perspective of the enslaved women, men, and children that were owned by the Hammond family. Participants will be guided through the slave quarters and hear stories about 19th century Christmas rituals. Five categories are presented that highlight important aspects of the holiday season for Hammond's slaves: food,

  • The African-American Experience at Redcliffe

    African Americans worked for four generations of the Hammond family, first as slaves, later as sharecroppers and tenant farmers, and finally as paid employees. Come learn about the lives of African Americans at Silver Bluff, Cowden, Cathwood and Redcliffe plantations from 1831 to 1975. Visitors will participate in hands-on activities, such as artifact identification, learning how historians investigate the social and cultural aspects of those who worked for the Hammond/Billings families. Participants will also receive a booklet with primary and secondary documentation, illustrations and photographs of African-American history from the files of Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site. Tours of the slave quarters and the mansion are included in the program fee.

  • 'Mallows and Dogs

    It's the last month of our 75th anniversary celebration for the South Carolina State Park Service, and Hamilton Branch SP would like to invite you to a party. Food, stories, and a beautiful setting on the shore of Lake Strom Thurmond - what better way to celebrate. Join us for a traditional campsite meal experience! We'll roast hot dogs and make s’mores on an open campfire. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
