  • Canoe With a Ranger

    Fall is as wonderful time to experience South Carolina's waterways. Join us as we paddle on the beautiful South Fork of the Edisto River, quietly enjoying the morning scenery along the banks. Every trip is sure to bring a little different experience. We'll meet at the canoe launch dock at 9:00 a.m., then take a quick shuttle to our put-in location. The two-mile trip will take approximately two hours to complete.

  • The African-American Experience at Redcliffe

    African Americans worked for four generations of the Hammond family, first as slaves, later as sharecroppers and tenant farmers, and finally as paid employees. Come learn about the lives of African Americans at Silver Bluff, Cowden, Cathwood and Redcliffe plantations from 1831 to 1975. Visitors will participate in hands-on activities, such as artifact identification, learning how historians investigate the social and cultural aspects of those who worked for the Hammond/Billings families. Participants will also receive a booklet with primary and secondary documentation, illustrations and photographs of African-American history from the files of Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site. Tours of the slave quarters and the mansion are included in the program fee.

  • Historic Holiday Candlelight Tours

    Experience the holidays as they were celebrated throughout the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries with candlelight tours of Redcliffe Plantation as well as historic houses in Augusta, GA including the Boyhood Home of Woodrow Wilson, the Lucy-Craft Laney Museum of Black History, Meadow Garden and the 1797 Ezekiel Harris House. Come out and enjoy interpreters in period costume, historic music and refreshments, as well as authentic period holiday decorations.

  • Christmas in the Quarters

    Explore the holidays at Redcliffe Plantation from the perspective of the enslaved women, men, and children that were owned by the Hammond family. Participants will be guided through the slave quarters and hear stories about 19th century Christmas rituals. Five categories are presented that highlight important aspects of the holiday season for Hammond's slaves: food,
