H. Cooper Black Jr. Memorial Field Trial and Recreation Area
The H. Cooper Black Jr. Memorial Field Trial and Recreation Area is the setting for national-level field trial and retriever competitions.
Covering 7,000 rolling acres of longleaf pine forest and fields, the park’s facilities include stables, kennels, corrals, arenas, waterfowl ponds, campgrounds and a kitchen/meeting hall.
There also are more than 20 miles of equestrian trails and sand roads for riders in the park, some that lead into Sand Hills State Forest.
H. Cooper Black is also adjacent to Cheraw State Park, which offers a championship golf course, cabins, camping, boating, fishing and more.

When & How PRT Acquired: Legislation was passed to transfer management of H. Cooper Black Jr. Memorial Field Trial and Recreatioin Area from the S.C. Forestry Commission to the S.C. State Park Service on July 1, 2006.

Pets: Pets must be voice command controlled or kept on a leash or in a kennel while in the camping area or within 1/4 mile of the camping area.

Driving Directions: From Cheraw: Take Hwy. 1 South for approximately 5.6 miles. Turn left onto Society Hill Rd and travel 4.5 miles. Turn right onto H. Cooper Road for 1.3 miles. Turn left onto Sporting Dog Trail.
From Florence: Take Hwy. 52 North. Pass through Society Hill, and travel approximately 3 miles. Turn left onto Society Hill Rd. and travel 3 miles. Turn left onto H. Cooper Road for 1.3 miles. Turn left onto Sporting Dog Trail.
