  • Battle of Rivers Bridge Guided Tour

On Feb. 2-3, 1865, 1,200 Confederate soldiers made a stand at Rivers Bridge on the Salkehatchie River against Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman’s sweep across South Carolina during the final months of the Civil War. Behind stout earthen fortifications, the Southerners fought a division of about 5,000 Union soldiers. Union troops crossed the swollen swamp on both ends of the Confederate line to finally win the battle. The tour will examine the still intact fortifications as well as the natural topography that led one Union general to call Rivers Bridge "… the strongest position I ever saw in my life." As part of South Carolina Park Service's 75th anniversary celebration, during the month of July the Battle of Rivers Bridge Guided Tour will include a special treat. Following the battle in 1865, Union soldiers prepared for possible counter attack by digging their own earthworks several hundred yards from the Confederate trenches. These earthworks are not normally open to the public, but for these special tours visitors will be allowed a unique chance to see this defensive line. The additional trek will be through thick woods so bug repellent is strongly suggested.

  • Fishing with a Ranger

Fishing is family fun, especially when you know the basics. Here is an opportunity to learn the ropes, or in this case, the knots, that will get you through any snag. We'll also practice baiting your hook and casting for accuracy. We encourage catch and release practices for this program. We'll have a camera nearby in case you land a lunker so you can back up your big fish story!

  • Birds of the Lowcountry

February in the Lowcountry is a time when many winter birds are still here and a few early migrators are stopping by to refuel. We might see ducks, waders, shorebirds and songbirds on a short hike around Lake Warren State Park. This program is designed for new birding enthusiasts.
