The Southeast coast is dotted with Native American shell middens, some dating back thousands of years. Some are small, some are large and ring-shaped, and others are just large deposits. Spanish Mount, one such large shell midden, dates back over 4,000 years and has produced some of the oldest known pottery on the East Coast! Join us for a Powerpoint presentation and a close-up view of some of the pottery that those mysterious, pre-historic inhabitants of Edisto Island left behind, and then we'll take a short walk to the shell mound.
