John Wells
Park Manager
Welcome to Sesqui!
I’m John Wells, the park manager here at Sesquicentennial State Park. Ever since my first backyard campout with my dad, I’ve loved being outdoors. Family camping trips, years of scouting, and even a healthy dose of Yogi Bear on Saturday mornings nudged me toward a future working in the woods and helping people enjoy them. After gaining early experiences with city & county park systems—and time at the South Carolina Botanical Gardens while earning my degree in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism at Clemson—I found my home in the South Carolina State Park Service. And truly, there’s no better place to be.
My favorite spot in the park is what our staff affectionately calls the “FEMA Bridge” on the Loop Trail. This 100-foot aluminum bridge spans Jackson Creek, installed after the historic floods of 2015. It overlooks a misty marsh with the soft sound of flowing water…a rare treat in the Midlands of South Carolina.
If you’re new to Sesqui, I always recommend starting with the two-mile Sandhills Trail. It’s mostly flat, mostly paved, and circles the park’s lake. Along the way, you’ll pass open day-use areas, the CCC-built spillway that resembles a series of waterfalls, and boardwalks that carry you safely over the swampy lowlands. It’s a little bit of everything that makes Sesqui special.
**Our Ultimate Outsider stamp is located just outside the entrance to the park office.
Sesquicentennial State Park, affectionately known to locals as "Sesqui," is a spacious, green getaway in the heart of the Sandhills region. Once you're immersed in the 1,400 acres of pines, camping sites, and nature trails you forget just how close you are to bustling, downtown Columbia, South Carolina.
Camping sites are available to overnight guests. The park provides kayak and canoe rentals, fishing, two nature trails and a 6-mile bicycle loop for day-use recreation.
